Norwegian youth in Lusaka for Climate Justice – Will stage concert on 16th November
A group of 54 Norwegians, 4 Kenyans and 2 Bangladeshis represent a delegation from Norwegian NGOs to join the African Youth Initiative on Climate Change (A.Y.I.C.C) Caravan that is planned to arrive from Nairobi in Durban on 23rd November 2011, in time to lobby at the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The main aim of the caravan is to create awareness about climate change and the importance of COP 17.
The idea of a youth caravan came to the African youth representatives during COP 15 in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009. A similar event was previously organized in India with great success. By sharing the idea with other likeminded organizations, the idea took a much larger shape and by late 2010, during the National Youth Conference on Climate Change held in Nairobi, the dream was to have youth representatives from all of Africa and beyond to travel to Durban for the COP 17 meeting via road. "We have faith-Act now for climate justice" campaign was launched.
On Monday November 7th, 160 youth started their long journey from Kenya through Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia and Botswana to South Africa and Durban. Before leaving, they let Nairobi know that it is time to act for climate justice. A concert was staged to launch the caravan. Similar concerts will be stages in all countries the caravan is passing through. See: To follow the caravan
In Lusaka, the concert will be on Wednesday, 16th November 2011 at Barclays Sports Complex in Longacres, from 15.00 to 22.00.
